Why do Nokia and Sony phones look so much better in Europe and Asia?

I looked online, and all the ones they have here are pretty much nasty. The ones they come out with in Europe and Asia have been really nice. I know that right now the iphone from apple is the biggest deal, but before that there hasn't really been that much here on the market.
