I need some websites please and help understanding this. Thank you I have looked all ove and cannot find anything.
It was related to politics - communism. The USSR was the first communist nation. It built a sphere of influence in Eastern Europe. Then China fell in 1949 (this ENRAGED America). The US wanted to keep communism from spreading (communism) so they got involved where they didn't need to be, and helped the democratic groups fight communism. There were 2 wars - the Korean & Vietnam Wars, - that were fought to prevent the spread of communism. Hope that's a background.
The US had a policy of not allowing or restricting the return of colonial powers to SE Asia after the Pacific War. Never the less, the French, Dutch and British regained control of lost areas such French Indochina (Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam) and Hong Kong.
The Cold War changed the US attitude, the Europeans were allies against the communists and so they helped them against the local nationalist / independence movements. The French recieved large amounts of aid from the US in their battles against the Viet Mihn in the 1950s, while the British used their own colonial troops in Malaya.
This commitment to fight any movement labeled "communist" drew them into several open conflicts (Vietnam , Cambodia) in SE Asia, and they assisted many pro West governments with money and arms to fight their own communist "threat".
