Strengths:

Large, so hard to conquer

Variations in climate, something for everybody

Diverse population so can gain from each other's strengths

Lots of natural resources in various areas of it

Lots of cultures so can use different ones for different good purposes: manufacture in one place, grow crops in another, etc.

Weaknesses:

Large so hard to communicate easily

Diverse population so hard to maintain feeling of unity

Lots of cultures so tends to fragment

Lots of belief systems so hard to maintain religious unity

Always a crisis going on somewhere
